Excuse me if I am mistaken, but since when did Gary Matthews Jr. gain the power to start demanding anything?
The last time anyone checked, Matthews Jr. had become an instant-out at the plate. The man hit .250 last season paired with an OPS just under .700. He was just atrocious in 2009, and it was actually an improvement from 2008!
Everyone remembers him for his fantastic defensive play in 2006. The truth is, he has become a very poor-fielding outfielder in the past 2 seasons, and that’s something that is only going to decline for the rest of his career.
With both of those facts in tow, he now starts demanding to be moved. According to Sportingnews.com, GMJ has been quoted saying “I’m ready to play for an organization that wants me to play every day”.
Maybe he has secret ties to some insane general manager who believes that Gary is still a potential Major League starter. It’s debatable as to whether Matthews Jr. even carries any value on a team’s bench, being such liability both defensively and offensively.
I thought the Cubs would have a hard time moving Milton Bradley this off-season, but even he seems to be garnering the interest of multiple teams ready to take the risk.
I honestly pity any team willing to take a 10 million dollar gamble on a borderline bench-player with a bad attitude in Gary Matthews Jr.

Agreed. Great article
Gary Matthews is just in the “bargaining” grief stage in the death of his MLB career. It’s a welcome change considering how long “anger” lasted.
If all goes according to plan, it should only be a matter of time until he gets depressed and the only thing lower than his spirit is his career batting average. This will most likely go back and forth with some more bargaining until he finally accepts the fact that he’s awful, and puts his baseball career out of its misery.
Great article Danny!
