Who’s surprised to see Tommy Hanson not win the Rookie of the Year award? Anyone? I’m not saying Chris Coghlan didn’t deserve some votes, but what I am saying is that Tommy Hanson was hands down my pick for the Rookie of the Year award. It’s pretty tough to ignore a guy who came up in June and was as good and dominant at times as some of the best pitchers in baseball. He was part of a Braves team that really started to make some noise in the postseason chase and I don’t know if the Braves even finish the way they do without Tommy Hanson. The even more ridiculous thing was, Tommy Hanson didn’t finish second either. If JA Happ won the award, I wouldn’t mind it as much because he had an outstanding season as well, and for the NL Champs. I don’t understand how they BOTH got overlooked. I really don’t. Give them 34 starts, and we’d be talking about them in the Cy Young vote (which the writers will probably screw up too).
Tommy Hanson
Wins-11
ERA- 2.89
K/BB Ratio- 2.52
OBA- .225
Runs allowed- 41 in 127 innings
WHIP- 1.18
These numbers rank Hanson in my opinion in the top 25 of all NL starters, and the sportswriters can’t even vote correctly? It’s a shame; it really is. I think I can honestly say that I’m getting tired of people who get to vote for certain awards that have no background within the game that even deserves a vote. It’s embarrassing.
Let’s head to the AL where it was equally as sad. The two favorites in my opinion were Gordon Beckham and Andrew Bailey. Followed by Rick Porcello, Jeff Niemann, and Elvis Andrus. Gordon Beckham won the players choice for the top rookie, so clearly the sports writers would have to take that into account right? Wrong. Beckham SOMEHOW finishes ….5th? I’m dead serious. He finished 5th. It absolutely boggles my mind that the players vote for one guy almost hands down and the media puts that same guy 5th? Andrew Bailey was the winner and no one can question that. The order in which it went- absolutely. The sportswriters failed once again at something they don’t deserve to vote for.
Andrew Bailey
ERA- 1.84
K’s- 91
BB- 24
IP-83.1
K/BB-3.79
HRs- 5
Whip- .88
Outstanding.

couldn’t have said it better myself.
The writrers suck
No respect for G Becks. Awful.
It’s just a shame. You figure the peers know a little more than the sportswriters. I don’t have a problem with Bailey winning- I have a problem with Beckham falling to 5.
in general, peer players know more than sportswriters or avid fans, but there are instances where that isn’t the case. vlad owns the rangers, so i’m sure their staff think he’s the toughest out in the game, which he’s clearly not anymore. when determining allstar reserves, players have a tendency to reward veterans for their careers, as do sportswriters and casual fans. these awards are supposed to reward guys who had the best performance over a specific time frame.
no problem with bailey in the AL. lights out. beckham deserved better than 5th, but it shouldn’t matter who’s first or fourth runner up…
i agree with you hanson should’ve won in the NL, but the voters who look at hanson’s 11-4 record (i know, not the best way to evaluate a pitcher) hold the fact that he only made 21 starts after being called up in the middle of the year against him, while coglan’s been up all year. coglan didn’t have a better season, just a longer one…
