Okay Bud Selig, it’s time for your experiment with the all star game to be over effectively immediately. That would be something I’d be extremely grateful for. I’m sure everyone knows that the winner of the all star game is awarded home field advantage for the world series and frankly- I still do not understand why that’s the case. Sure it’s nice to see the All Star Game being managed like it’s a real game, but using it as a ploy is killing the fun of the postseason. I can’t wait for the year where the best record team doesn’t get home field because their league lost the All Star game. The uproar is going to be glorious and I’m hoping that will spell the end of this stupid rule. Bud Selig, it’s time to check yourself into an institution of some sorts because there isn’t a reason for this.
The all star game is supposedly for the fans right? Allowing the fans to vote for the starters? Does it not occur to you that the fans usually don’t vote for the best player of the position that year, but vote for the popular name? So basically, we’re putting something as important as home field advantage almost in the fans hands to a certain extent. Please- give me a reason why that makes sense. I dare you. If the all star game is determining something this important, there’s no way in heck the fans should have a say in anything. It should be the players and managers of the game picking the rosters. Period. If I’m the manager of a team in the playoff hunt, I don’t think I’d like seeing guys who shouldn’t be in the all star game actually starting the all star game. Not to mention, starting pitchers usually go only 2-3 innings. I’m pretty sure home field advantage is an important thing in the world series so wouldn’t it make sense to actually make it a real like baseball game? And taking a full week off so pitchers can throw more than 2-3 innings?
The system as it is is stupid, but if it’s going to stay this way- there needs to be some adjustments.
1) Every team does not have to have a representative.
2) Rosters should be picked by players and coaches of the game. The fans should have no say in something this important.
3) Make the all star game a week long thing, allowing both leagues to showcase their best pitchers which give each league a better chance at winning the game.
Of better yet- why don’t we just get rid of the home field advantage garbage? That seems to be the most reasonable solution to a really stupid problem.

I agree with everything you said, the all-star game is an exhibition game where the “best” players play for the fans. Yet it decides home field advantage? This makes no sense, and the best players are definitely in the game, many are indeed in the game because of the name. Example: Manny Ramirez received a over 100,000 votes for the all star game and he was serving a 50 game suspension. Fans should have a limited say in the all star game; perhaps let the fans only vote for the final spot for each team like the contest they have every year for the final roster spot.
It’s really a double edged sword. MLB wants to keep the fans involved for the all star game, but at the same time- want it to mean something. Where do you draw the line? The idea was made out of desperation due to the tie in the 11th inning. I don’t understand the big fuss- it was a great game. But baseball freaked out because bad fans had complaints so they rushed something into the agreement that really wasn’t thoroughly thought over. That’s the problem. It needs to be addressed. It was fine this year since the Yanks had the best record and the AL won the AS game- but what happens when it’s opposite? You’ll have more of an argument when that happens…home field advantage is outrageously important.
