Is Figgins Really the Best Choice for Seattle?

I’ll be frank. I think the Mariners dropped the ball again in terms of spending money on the free agent market. Everyone knew that Figgins was going to be overpaid, but I think he was overpaid by a team that frankly needs more than another speedster to compete in the AL West with the Angels and surging Rangers. Not to mention, is that going to put a damper on extending King Felix down the stretch? 45 million is a lot of money, and Seattle isn’t exactly a monster in terms of marketability. If this deal actually does get done ( and it’s extremely close in getting done), I truly think it’s going to end up being a bad one. I believe that Seattle needs to get some thunder in that lineup. Jason Bay is rumored to have interest in going home, and if you need a third basemen that badly- why not look into the second tier of second basemen like Melvin Mora, Mark DeRosa, heck maybe even Miguel Tejada or Pedro Feliz, than pull out all the stops to make Jason Bay become a Mariner. There were better options on the table and I think Seattle really jumped the gun here. This one will continue to be second guessed until Figgins can put up back to back good campaigns.

  1. Here I thought I was going to be in the minority here. We agree on this one so much, that my blog I wrote this morning is pretty close to the same thing as you got here. so needless to say I agree with you.
