Jermaine Dye has been one of the more underrated players in the last 10-15 years. He consistently produces at the plate and does it without much flair for the dramatic. That’s why I think Jermaine Dye could end up as a St. Louis Cardinal this offseason WHEN, not IF they miss out on Matt Holliday. I believe Jermaine has plenty of baseball left in him. He is still pretty decent in the outfield, still has a decent arm, and can still hit for power. When Holliday signs elsewhere, they’re going to need a bat in the outfield to justify trading their top talent last July for Matt Holliday. They’re going to need that bat to come relatively cheaply. Everything fits here. Dye provides the pop to protect Albert, probably won’t command a monster multi-year deal, and I can see something like a 2 year deal worth around 11-12.5 million dollars with some potential incentives getting done. That would be a heck of a signing for St. Louis, and I think for being a mid market team, their fans would be happy with the way Dye goes about his business. I realize he had a bad second half in 2009, but that’s all part of baseball. He wasn’t showing a lot of age so why not St. Louis?

Jermaine Dye being fitted for red?
