After getting information on the Braves signing Billy Wagner, I wasn’t all that surprised by it, I was more skeptical. Rafael Soriano was good, real good in the 9th inning last year. In my opinion, he is the best free agent, late-inning guy out there this year. Why would the Braves give Wagner, whose 38 years old that kind of money when they could have given a multi-year deal to Soriano? Wagner is most likely going to retire here in the next couple years, and the Braves will once again be looking for a late-inning guy. There’s nothing wrong with Wagner, seeing as he’s one of the best left handed relievers in history, but this is a short term deal with no sense of worrying about the future. If you forget about the future- I just don’t know how long your organization can succeed. Not signing Soriano is going to come back and haunt Atlanta especially if Soriano continues to pitch the way he’s capable of.
