Colorado Rockies Top Ten Prospects 2010

1) Tyler Matzek- SP

Left handed and a hard thrower. He’s a mid 90′s guy and has an outstanding breaking ball. He’s got some real solid mechanics from what I’ve seen and this could be the 1 in a couple years. Rockie fans should be able to enjoy this guy pitch for a long time.

2) Eric Young Jr-2B/OF

EYJ is a lot like his dad. That’s a good thing by the way. He’s fast, he’s got the right fundamentals defensively, and he’ll hit a little hit. Playing in Colorado will help his power which I think is below average, but still- him and Dexter Fowler at the top of the order could be the fastest 1-2 in baseball.

3) Christian Friederich- SP

Doesn’t throw nearly as hard as Matzek but he’s got a better hammer. He can lose his command at times, but otherwise should turn into a nice 2-4.

4) Jhoulys Chacin- SP

Not many minor leaguers can say their second best pitch is their change up. Chacin can. He’s got a real real good one  and has the opportunity to get better. Throws more of a sinker which should bode well in the high altitude.

5) Rex Brothers- RP/CP

Here’s a guy that could end up being the closer in a  year or two. Throws hard from the left side with a late breaking slider. A bigger Billy Wagner with better mechanics? With a good spring- he could be on the plane to Colorado as a late inning reliever.

6) Nolan Arenado-3b

Big body/strong kid. A little bit like Brett Wallace.  Has some big power, but I don’t think he’ll be a high average/contact guy. More of an all or nothing slugger. I don’t think he’ll be nimble enough to play 3b in the bigs- but all reports say he’s a good athlete. Maybe they’ll prep him as Todd Helton’s replacement.

7) Tim Wheeler- OF

First round pick- more of an average guy as he’ll never pop 20 plus homers. Above average speed, and can go get it in the outfield. Outside of that-he probably won’t shine as any sort of franchise cornerpiece- I see him as a poor man’s Hunter Pence (with less power).

8) Hector Gomez- SS

Outstanding talent- only thing holding him back could be his maturity and dedication. No one’s questioning his ability to play the game- but can he play the game as a focused pro? I personally think he could serve as better trade bait as the middle infield could be set with Tulo and EYJ.

9) Esmil Rogers- SP

Now or never or so it seems. Has been in the system since 2003 and is now 24. He’s got some decent stuff but he won’t blow you away. He’s around the zone at times- wild at times which tells me his command is keeping him away from Coors. Once highly touted- now could be a bust. Big year ahead in terms of where he’s going to go.

10) Willin Rosario- C

Young- handles well.
