About: Matt Milner

Profile
My name is Matt Milner. I am currently a student majoring in Anthropology, hopefully completing my bachelor's degree in the next year. As for baseball, I have been a follower of the game for years. I am an avid Cubs fan, as all the writers on this site are, but my enthusiasm for the game extends far beyond the reach of all things Cubs-related. I am a huge proponent of Sabermetrics and believe that this game is fueled by numbers, and should be analyzed that way. The trick is finding ways in which Sabermetrics fit in with fantasy baseball - some players are great fantasy players, but just average real-life players. My goal is to bring analysis to fantasy baseball that can exploit the advances in statistics that could help put teams over the edge.

Yankees Vs. Red Sox: Who Is the Team to Beat?

Posted on Wednesday, March 10, 2010

In 2009, the Yankees and Red Sox reached the playoffs for the 9th and 6th time, respectively, since 2000. This year is shaping up to be very similar, leaving the Rays, Blue Jays, and Orioles on the outside looking in. While both teams will likely end up in the playoffs, it still begs the question: [...]

Fifth Starter Battles

Posted on Friday, March 5, 2010

All across baseball there are teams with undecided fifth starters. I’m going to give a rundown of the battles to keep an eye on.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Last year’s NL West champs have a bunch of guys fighting for a spot in the rotation. Eric Stults, Charlie Haeger and Carlos Monasterios all pitched in the spring opener, [...]

How Does Felipe Lopez Fit?

Posted on Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Last week, the Cardinals finally signed Felipe Lopez to a 1 year deal worth 2.2 Million dollars if he achieves all of the required incentives. This move is a logical, if unspectacular one for the Cards who now have a plethora of middle infielders. Lopez joins Brendan Ryan, Skip Schumaker, and Julio Lugo. With Ryan’s [...]

Mock Draft Madness: Rounds 1-10

Posted on Wednesday, February 24, 2010

One of the keys to filling a good roster on draft day is participating in mock drafts. They will help you figure out exactly what kind of lists you’ll want to have in order to effectively draft the players you want and need. For this draft, I used a tiered list of each position and [...]

Fantasy Baseball Planning Part II

Posted on Thursday, February 18, 2010

Last week, I posted Fantasy Baseball Planning Part I, where I laid out some of the tools and methods to use for a fantasy draft. In Part II, I’m going to go a little more in depth.
Positional Scarcity
If you’ve looked at a list of players at all this offseason, you’ve noticed that there are a [...]

The Right Call

Posted on Tuesday, February 16, 2010

So, I was watching Baseball Tonight a few days ago, and the analysts were discussing something very interesting: technology. Now, I’m going to preface this by saying I generally don’t like Baseball Tonight or ESPN’s baseball coverage in general very much. However, I don’t have MLB Network and anything baseball related is helping me endure [...]

Fluke or Fact: Adam Wainwright

Posted on Thursday, February 11, 2010

Adam Wainwright had an amazing 2009 campaign, posting a 19-8 record and a 2.63 ERA. His peripheral stats were also outstanding. He had an 8.19 K/9, and a 2.55 BB/9 along with a fantastic 1.21 WHIP.  His sabermetric DIPS statistics uphold what the more basic numbers tell us: a 3.11 FIP and a 3.28 tERA [...]

Fantasy Baseball Planning Part I

Posted on Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Now that the Super Bowl is over, it is time for fantasy baseball season. In that spirit, let’s talk about draft methodology.
There are a bunch of websites that offer free fantasy baseball, including ESPN.com, Yahoo, and CBS Sportsline. These sites also offer free player rankings. DO NOT use them. In most cases, what these rankings [...]

Matt Holliday’s Impact

Posted on Tuesday, February 2, 2010

When Matt Holliday signed with the St. Louis Cardinals, almost every fan and baseball pundit more or less crowned the Cardinals as repeat champs of the National League Central. While I have to give the preseason edge to the Cardinals, I think this division shakes out to be a lot tighter than what most people [...]

Talks Heating Up With Sheets

Posted on Tuesday, January 26, 2010

It was reported recently that the Chicago Cubs had put Ben Sheets on the back-burner, despite mutual interest.
Well, today Jim Bowden tweets “Ben Sheets negotiations, according to reliable sources, are heating up with teams most interested … the Rangers, Mets, Mariners, A’s and Cubs.”
Also, on MLB Live with Bowden and Joe Castellano, Bowden reported that [...]
